FreeCal is a calorie and macro tracker for iPhone. Every feature is included from the first launch: food search, barcode scanning, photo scanning, weight trend, adaptive targets, Apple Health, and export. There is no trial, no locked tier, and no account to create.
What it does
You log food four ways. Search a database of foods and branded products, scan a barcode, photograph your plate and let the app list what is on it, or type a number. The Today screen shows calories left, protein, carbs and fat against your targets, and the day’s meals underneath.
Weigh in when you like. FreeCal draws a trend through the daily readings so one heavy morning does not move the line. After two weeks of logging, it works out what you actually burn from that trend and what you ate, and adjusts your calorie target against it. If you would rather set your own numbers, you can, and the app never changes them.
What it costs
Nothing. FreeCal is paid for by ads: a banner at the top of each tab, at most one full-screen ad a day, and a short video before a photo scan once you have used your first three scans. Nothing appears while you are logging.
If you would rather not see ads, No Ads is $4.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $99.99 once. It removes the ads and unlocks nothing else, because there is nothing else to unlock.
What stays on your phone
Your diary, weigh-ins and targets live on your phone. Food searches and barcodes go through our server to look up nutrition, and a photo scan sends the photo to be read, but none of it is stored on our side and none of it goes to an advertiser. The privacy policy says exactly what leaves the device and why.
What is next
FreeCal is brand new, so there are not many reviews yet and there will be rough edges. If something is wrong, tell us and we will fix it. Bigger things we are working on: better search suggestions as you type, and more branded foods.
