> FreeCal is a free calorie and macro tracker for iPhone (US) by Andrew Pierce. Every feature is included in the free version: food search, barcode scanning, photo scanning, weight trend, adaptive or manual targets, Apple Health and CSV export. It is paid for by ads. ## Key facts

- Platform: iPhone, iOS 17 or later. US App Store only for now.
- Price: free with ads. No trial, no locked tier, no account.
- Ads: a banner at the top of each tab, at most one full-screen ad a day, a short video before a photo scan after the first three scans.
- No Ads: $4.99/month, $29.99/year, $99.99 one-time. Removes ads, unlocks nothing else.
- Tracks calories, protein, carbs and fat. Does not track micronutrients.
- Adaptive targets: after two weeks of logging and weigh-ins, the app measures expenditure from the weight trend and adjusts the calorie target every two weeks. Manual targets are never changed by the app.
- Data: the diary, weigh-ins and targets stay on the phone. Food searches, barcodes and scan photos go through the FreeCal server for lookup and are not stored. Nothing is shared with advertisers beyond what the ad SDK collects.
- Food data: FatSecret Platform API, with Open Food Facts as a backup for barcodes.
